NANOTECHNOLOGY IN LATIN AMERICA , CURRENT SITUATION AND TEND GUMS
Iberoamerican Observatory of Science, Technology and Society
Author: Óscar Álvarez Macías
The Nanotechnology refers to the creation of functional materials, devices and systems through control of matter at the atomic and molecular level. Is a strongly interdisciplinary activity that involves, among others, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and engineering. From a formal point of view, nanotechnology refers to the understanding and control of matter on scales smaller than 100 nm (1 nm = 1 × 10-7 cm). On this scale, called the mesoscopic scale, there are unique phenomena, arising from the quantum nature of matter, which can be used for new applications.
is a practice customary to speak of nanoscience and nanotechnology without specifying the differences between the two concepts. However, there is a consensus among specialists that nanosciences are the generators of the basic knowledge of this specific phenomenology of the mesoscopic scale, from the standpoint of physics, like chemistry or biology, whereas Nanotechnologies refer themselves to observing techniques, manipulation and fabrication of nanostructures and devices at that scale. Therefore, nanotechnology is considered as strictly as new engineering of the XXI century, based on the knowledge provided by research in nanoscience. Full Text
